Boosting College-going Mindset for Latinx students
With the goal of creating programming to close socioeconomic, achievement and opportunity gaps for Latinx students in Idaho’s rural, agricultural Treasure Valley region, the College of Western Idaho has targeted outreach to native Spanish speaking high school students by providing the opportunity to take the College-Level Examination Program (CLEP)’s Spanish Language exam. This session will share results of research completed in 2019 that showed the significant impact of earning CLEP credit on Latinx students’ aspirations, mindset, and self-efficacy to pursue a post-secondary degree. Hundreds of high school students have earned thousands of college credits, influencing their decision to enroll in college, while saving time and money prior to college enrollment. This session will provide a brief overview of CLEP, detail the initiative specifics, share results of the research, as well as provide CLEP resources you can utilize to promote and support the Latinx demographic towards post-secondary education.
